How many annoyed grunts does it take to make a "Simpsons" movie? Find out on the DVD.

Ithaca, 19 December 07 -- As a Matt Groening fan, I can remember when Apple used his sketch-like "Life is Hell" artwork and characters to promote Macintosh computers to college students. I say this just to give you an idea of how long I've been looking forward to a movie based on "The Simpsons," the popular cartoon that turned the fledgling FOX network into a behemoth and paved the way for any number of other animated sitcoms.

I'm glad to say it was worth the wait! A staff that's only had to come up with 20 minutes worth of story at a time did extremely well assembling a full-length motion picture that was coherent and cohesive as a complete story, and stayed true to its roots, while adding some elements of the summer blockbuster. And, in a delightfully quick turnaround, the summer blockbuster arrived this week on DVD, just in time for last-minute stocking-stuffer shopping.

As befits a summer blockbuster, "The Simpsons Movie" features a government conspiracy, the stunning, unspoiled vistas of Alaska, death and destruction, and a motorcycle jump over a gaping chasm.

Lots of movies offer viewers a bonus or two for those who'll sit through the credits to the end. These "credit cookies" sometimes include bloopers (we loved that feature of "Monsters, Inc."), fun animations (see the "Harry Potter" series), or even an epilogue. We're not surprised that "The Simpsons Movie" just keeps going, but we couldn't help but feel sorry for those folks who made a beeline for the door rather than sticking around for the end of the movie.

Why did we wait so long for "The Simpsons Movie"? Simply, we weren't done with "The Simpsons" arriving in our living rooms each week. Most movies that evolve out of TV series wait until the series is over, but eventually, "Simpsons" producers stopped waiting. We're glad they did.
